Kia is recalling almost 22,000 Borrego SUVs from the 2009 model year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says these models have non-adjustable brake pedals that could snap.

Borregos with non-adjustable “pedal mounts may have a fiberglass composition that allows them to break off in a collision where the impact has not immobilized the vehicle, which would then allow the vehicle to roll,” says NHTSA. If the pedal snaps, the driver may need to use the parking brake to stop the car. If the driver can’t stop the car, there could be a second collision.

Affected Borregos were manufactured from May 2, 2008 to Jan. 20, 2009. You can see when your Borrego was built by checking the sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. The recall will begin this month, and Kia dealers will replace the brake pedal mount for free. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

This is the second Kia recall that’s been announced recently. The first applied to 2006 to 2009 Kia Rio models for an issue with the airbag system.
